The ‘Kuhn Metasa’ PLM large seed mechanical plate planters have specifically been designed as a no-nonsense 3-point entry level minimum tillage planters for the small to medium farmers wanting to grow maize, sunflower, soy, bean, corn, cotton and sorghum cultures. The simple yet tough planters are ideally suited for low horsepower tractors ranging from 25 – 50kw. The standard model planters are available in row widths ranging from 1 – 4 rows spaced at 45, 75 or 90cm respectively. (A special 3 row planter with rows spaced at 230cm is also available for planting in very low rainfall areas) As standard equipment all the models are fitted with row markers that mark to the center of the tractor and the 3-point mounted toolbars have mechanical adjustable 13’ pneumatic wheels fitted to maintain constant toolbar height. An additional feature that makes the PLM planter so unique is also its ability to change from a 1-4 row planter very quickly and easily. Each row unit is totally independent from each other as they each have their own land wheel drive. This effectively means the planter row spacing can be changed at the drop of a hat or units can quickly be added or removed to suit various size tractors.
The parallel linkage PLM row unit is made up as follows; it has a large 17” fixed residue cutting disc in the front followed by an adjustable fertilizer knife opener which is fed from a 60L plastic fertilizer hopper mounted onto the row unit. (The fertilizer is placed below or to the side of the seed and as optional equipment; the knife opener can be substituted for 13” un-phased double disc opener) Behind this one finds the 13” un-phased double disc seed openers that are fed from a 40L plastic seed hopper mounted onto the row unit. To close the seed, two adjustable 9.5” scalloped disc are located behind the seed openers for closing. The individual drive for the seed and fertilizer units is by means of chain and sprocket that is driven from a large rubber land wheel found at the rear of the row unit. Metering of the fertilizer is by means of a spiral roller and that of the seed, by means of fitting various size seed plates that are mechanically driven.
